The Orpheum Theater Center is hosting a Fiesta de Perú featuring brass band La Patronal on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 pm at the Iowa Valley Continuing Education Center, 3702 S. Center St., in Marshalltown. Tickets are $12.50 each and will be sold at the door beginning at 6 pm; admission is free to MCC students with a current student ID.
La Patronal is a unique brass band from Lima, Peru. Rooted in the tradition of ‘fiestas populares’ (town fairs common in rural villages across Latin America), La Patronal honors these gatherings, which celebrate tradition through fireworks, dancing, masks, and religious images. La Patronal members are direct descendants of rural musicians from Peru, and use this knowledge of folk culture in combination with their formal music studies to preserve their heritage while also bringing it to the present. Their lively performances encourage audience participation and dancing with contagious percussion and vibrant brass and winds.
Orpheum Director Bob Untiedt says the performance is family-friendly and will be enjoyed by all ages.
This engagement of La Patronal is made possible through Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
La Patronal will perform a second Fiesta de Perú exclusively for Marshalltown Community College students and staff on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 1 pm. The second performance is co-sponsored by the MCC Diversity Committee.
