Poweshiek County has a New Shooting Sports Trailer for Archery and Air Rifle Safety Education
Sunday, September 23rd Poweshiek County Conservation and Poweshiek County Shooting Aces 4-H club unveiled their new Shooting Sports Trailer at an appreciation luncheon. The trailer is designed for beginning archery and air rifle safety education. “This project was possible through a strong partnership with Iowa State University Extension and the Poweshiek County 4-H program, a grant from Poweshiek County Alliance, and the generous donations of several local organizations that realize the value of investing in our youth and educating the public,” according to Poweshiek County Conservation Naturalist, Emily Klein.
In addition to the grant of $7800 from the Poweshiek County Alliance towards the purchase of an enclosed trailer, over $4000 was donated from local organizations including Izaak Walton League, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Whitetails Unlimited, Poweshiek County Sportsman’s Association, and Brownell’s. An 8.5×20 foot enclosed trailer was purchased from 4 Seasons Trailer and Equipment in Grinnell. The trailer is outfitted with storage shelves across the v-nose, foam target blocks, a ballistic arrow and pellet proof curtain, and heavy felt carpet on the sides, floor, and roof baffling. Renny Crawford, Coordinator of the Shooting Aces 4-H Club, also commented on the partnership and the generous donations. “This has long been a goal of our club to obtain a trailer. A special thanks to Poweshiek County Conservation for helping us attain this goal. The organizations and businesses and Poweshiek County Alliance have supported our program since its beginning 13 years ago and we are excited that they have helped us move to the next level. The Shooting Aces 4-H club already owns much of the equipment. We have been working with one of the state 4-H air rifle coaches to select and purchase several air rifles, targets, and equipment to be used in the trailer and for the Shooting Aces 4-H club members for practice and competition.” The Shooting Aces 4-H club is open to any local youth aged 9 to 18 years, and is a part of the Iowa 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports program. Trained and certified instructor leaders conduct the program and assist club members in attaining knowledge and life skills in archery, shotgun, rifle, muzzleloader, and wildlife conservation.
The trailer will be set up for archery at public events this Fall including Kites Over Grinnell on September 29th and the Trunk or Treat at Diamond Lake Halloween event on October 6th. Mark your calendars and plan to attend one of these fun events with your family and friends.
