A 52 year old Arizona woman was sentenced in Jasper County District Court this week for taking her ex’s pick-up when she left him and came to Iowa. Kellie Smith of Tonto Basin Arizona, which is just northeast of Phoenix, pleaded guilty to Operating a Vehicle Without Owner’s Consent. Her sentence from District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda is 14 days in jail and an 855-dollar fine. Smith was arrested November 2nd at the Westbound I-80 Rest Area just west of Grinnell. She was working as the attendant there. A State Trooper conducting rest area checks ran the Arizona License plate on an unoccupied Ford F-250, and discovered it had been reported stolen. The Trooper then went into the rest area looking for the driver. He asked the attendant, who was Smith, about the truck. Initially she said she didn’t know who was driving it. But moments later, after the Trooper checked the men’s restroom for possible drivers, Smith confessed to taking the pick-up. She claimed her ex left for Colorado and left the keys in the truck. She added her ex knew she had it, and was mad at her for leaving him.
