A competency hearing has been set for the man accused of a stabbing at the 1st Avenue West Git-N-Go Thursday September 29th. 33 year old Duanne Cordero Lopez of Newton is charged with Attempted Murder, Going Armed with Intent, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, and Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime. He’s being held in the Jasper County Jail without bond. Newton Police Sgt Dillion Lavely says the man Lopez stabbed once in the abdomen at the convenience store, doesn’t  know Lopez. The victim was treated at the local hospital and released. Sgt. Lavely says Lopez moved to Newton in September..and has an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Denver Colorado. Police there have charged him with Domestic Assault. Yesterday (Monday) District Court Judge Michael Jacobsen set a December 27th competency hearing for Lopez, and ordered that he undergo inpatient treatment if warranted…after that hearing.
