Jasper County Veterans Affairs Administrator Alyssa Wilson has started meeting with the County’s veterans in their home.

That’s Wilson as she spoke at the County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. She says the County’s Commission of Veterans Affairs just approved the in-home visits in May, after a little convincing.

The Keith she reports to is Veterans Service Organization representative Keith Thorpe. Wilson told the County Supervisors she will be tracking the number of home visits she makes, as she starts focusing more on office outreach. She also told the Supervisors 8 new local veterans started using the “Jasper Rides” service last month, and another this month. “Jasper Rides” is volunteers taking veterans to medical appointments…which include trips to Knoxville, Marshalltown, Des Moines, and Iowa City. According to Wilson, the added participants in the service has come at a time when high gas prices have reduced the number of available drivers.

The Jasper County Veterans Affairs Office will soon be operating out of the new County Administration Building at 315 West 3rd Street North. The phone number to contact them about available assistance is 792-7993.
