The Newton Fire Department is investigating the cause of a garage fire that did considerable damage in a northeast neighborhood last (Tuesday) night. Department personnel responded to 605 East 13th Street North just before 8:30 p.m.. When firefighters arrived, the detached garage was fully involved in flames and the heat from the fire was melting siding on neighboring homes. Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik says the garage was only a few feet from houses on either side. But he notes a quick knockdown of the fire kept it from spreading to other structures. The fire was under control within 30 minutes and completely out by 9:45 p.m.. According to Wellik, crews stayed on scene until 10:50 p.m. last (Tuesday) night. One Newton firefighter sustained a minor injury and was taken to MercyOne Newton and released. Also at the scene were members of the Baxter and Kellogg Fire Departments and Newton Police Officers.
