The Newton Cardinals fell to the PCM Mustangs 29-28 in overtime on Friday night. PCM led 15-0 early on, and 15-7 at halftime. The Mustangs extended the lead to 22-7 after the Cardinals fumbled away the 2nd half kickoff. Newton scored twice in the 4th quarter, including Dylan Farver’s 3rd TD run of the game with 22-second remaining in regulation. A two point conversion pass from Kyle Long to Julian Hotchkin tied the game. A quick interception gave the Cardinals the ball back and a chance to win the game as time ran out but Josh Meyer’s 42-yard field goal attempt bounced off the crossbar. PCM opened overtime with a touchdown and kicked the conversion point to take a 29-22 lead. Newton also scored a touchdown on their overtime possession, but failed on a two-point conversion. William Cheng rushed for 89 yards while Kyle Long had 115 yards passing for Newton. The game was played at Central College in Pella as the football stadiums at both high schools were undergoing turf replacement.
