Grinnell High School will have a new head football coach this fall. In a stunning development, Head Coach Brian Sauser has abruptly resigned, turning in his resignation this weekend. There are unconfirmed reports that he will take the Football Head Coaching position at Ames High School.
Sauser has not responded to an interview request from KGRN. Ames High School did not confirm the hiring of Sauser, only to say that they are in the process of hiring a new football coach and one could be approved at their next board meeting which is next week.
Sauser is under contract at the Grinnell Newburg school system for next year and the School Board would have to approve releasing him from his contract which would be a formality.
Sauser coached Grinnell High for 3 seasons and oversaw the resurgence of the football program, going 17-12 overall. In 2018, the Tigers went from a 1 win team the previous 2 seasons to a 3-6 record. In 2019, Grinnell went 6-3 and narrowly missed the playoffs. Last season, Grinnell went 8-3 and made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. The Tigers won a first round game against Fort Madison, then knocked off Pella 6-0 on the road before losing at Xavier in the quarterfinals.
Sauser’s oldest son Dodge Sauser just graduated from Grinnell High and is currently a freshman at Iowa State University in Ames. His youngest son Dallas Sauser was the starting quarterback last season as a sophomore until suffering an injury and did not play the final 5 weeks.
