Veteran’s Day Service In Newton while City and County Offices are Closed
Today is Veteran’s Day so Newton City Offices and the County Courthouse are closed and there will be no mail delivery. Newton’s Veterans Day Ceremony, hosted by the local American Legion and VFW Posts, will be held at 11a.m. Monday at the American Legion at 1101 West 4th Street South. The guest speaker will be retired Brigadier General Craig Bargfrede of Ankeny. His past service includes Commander of the 185th Regional Training Institute at Camp Dodge, and Commander of the 734th Agri-Business Development Team that deployed to Kunar Afghanistan and served from July 2010 to June 2011. His many military declarations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star medal, the Army Commendation medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iowa National Guard Medal for Merit. Curt Jackson is the Director of Jasper County Veterans Affairs. He’s a veteran himself having served as a sailor on a nuclear submarine for 6 years, from 1976 to 1982. He’s been with the local Veterans Affairs Department for 3 and a half years and says he’s met about 80-percent of the County’s veterans.
Jackson’s Office is located in the County Annex Building at 115 North 2nf Avenue East in Newton. He helps local veterans with a variety of issues.
Jackson urges veterans to contact him within a year of leaving the service, especially if they have a medical issue.
