Aldi Grocery Store Potentially Coming to Vacant Southeast Newton Property

Preparations are being made to potentially bring an Aldi Grocery store to the southeast edge of Newton. The proposed site is the 300-block of Iowa Speedway drive, directly south of the strip mall and across the street from the south entrance to Wal-Mart. This week the City Council approved a minor plat related to the project and rezoned the western edge of the site from One and Two Family Residential to Arterial Commercial. Project Coordinator Andrea Rand with design and engineering firm ISG of Bloomington Minnesota says the land is currently owned by Daniel and Ronda Birkenholtz. She adds the lot for the proposed Aldi Grocery store is 2.45 acres. She also notes a 25-foot landscape buffer on the west side of the lot would separate the store from the nearby residential area.
